The focus on strategic transport corridor development is underpinned by KwaZulu-Natal’s role as a key logistics gateway within South Africa, anchored by the Port of Durban and a network of major freight and passenger corridors. These corridors are critical for facilitating trade, connecting industrial hubs, and supporting regional economic integration. However, many of these corridors face challenges such as congestion, infrastructure degradation, and limited intermodal integration, which undermine their efficiency and competitiveness. Addressing these constraints through coordinated corridor planning is essential to enhancing the movement of goods and people and to sustaining economic growth within the province.
Furthermore, corridors are not merely transport routes but integrated economic systems that influence land use, industrial development, logistics investments and spatial transformation. A corridor-based approach enables the alignment of infrastructure investment with broader economic development objectives, ensuring that transport systems actively support industrialisation, job creation and regional connectivity. By strengthening governance, improving infrastructure sequencing and fostering collaboration between public and private stakeholders, the province can unlock the full economic potential of its transport corridors and position itself as a competitive regional logistics hub.
